Developing a fascination with our world and its people is what year 1 and year 2 geography’s all about. Your child will do lots of practical activities outside the classroom e.g. looking at houses, shops and parks, will learn about people and places around the world, and will learn to use maps, globes and atlases.
The national curriculum for geography expects children to have learnt about the following by the end of year 2 so if your child is in year 1, they’ve still got plenty of time to meet these expectations. Geography is different from subjects like English, maths and science where the expectations are related to just one year group. The expectations for geography cover both year 1 and 2.
The year 1 geography curriculum is divided into 5 areas:
- Locational knowledge
- Place knowledge
- Human and physical geography
- Geographical skills and fieldwork
Here’s the detail:
Name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans
Name locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas
Understand similarities and differences between life in a small area of the UK and in a non-European country
HUMAN AND PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
Identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom
Identify hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator and the North and South Poles
